Sewing is an exciting and rewarding skill. However, getting started can feel overwhelming—especially when it comes to threading your machine correctly. If you've ever struggled with winding the bobbin, threading the needle, or even making your first stitch, this step-by-step guide is for you!
Why Learn to Sew?
Sewing allows you to create beautiful garments and home decor. It also offers a creative outlet that can reduce stress. Plus, knowing how to sew saves you money and gives you the satisfaction of making something by hand.
I've created a detailed YouTube tutorial walking you through this process. Make sure to watch it here and subscribe for more helpful sewing tips! Now, let’s get started.
Step 1: How to Thread the Bobbin
Before you can sew, you need to wind your bobbin. Here’s how:
Place the thread spool on the spool pin.
Pull the thread through the bobbin winding tension disk.
Insert the thread through the bobbin hole and place the bobbin onto the winding pin.
Push the bobbin winding pin to the right and press the foot pedal to start winding.
Once full, cut the thread and remove the bobbin.
Step 2: How to Thread the Sewing Machine
Now that your bobbin is ready, let’s thread the sewing machine. Follow these steps:
Place the thread spool on the spool pin.
Pull the thread through the thread guide and follow the threading path in your sewing machine’s manual.
Thread the tension discs and bring the thread down, looping it around the take-up lever.
Guide the thread down through the needle bar and thread it through the eye of the needle.
Step 3: How to Insert the Bobbin
With your sewing machine threaded, it’s time to insert the bobbin. Here’s how:
Open the bobbin case and insert the wound bobbin.
Pull the thread through the bobbin tension slot.
Hold the top thread and turn the handwheel to bring the bobbin thread up.
Pull both threads toward the back of the machine.
Step 4: Sew Your First Stitch
Now that your machine is threaded and ready to go, it’s time to sew! Here’s how to make your first stitch:
Place your fabric under the presser foot.
Lower the presser foot and hold the thread tails lightly.
Press the foot pedal to start sewing, guiding the fabric as needed.
Sew a few stitches, then backstitch to secure the seam.
